Ray Martinez - Guitars - 1985 to Spring 1995
Ray Martinez has had a long career in music, notably in the band Spring in the early 1970s, and Airwaves later in the decade, also spending may years as a session musician. He released a single under his own name, called "Ray Of Sunshine" released in 1976 on the United Artists label. The song was not written by Ray, but the b-side "A Lot Of Love" was. He also wrote a song for Cliff Richard, "The Only Way Out" which was a top-10 hit in 1982.
He joined Showaddywaddy in August 1985, replacing Russ Field who left in July of that year. Ray had been acquainted with the band for many years, having played in a sideline band (Burglar's Dog) in 1981 with Malcolm Allured and Al James. Ray is believed to have played on the odd SWW recording in the early '80s. A song recorded by Airwaves in 1978, "Nobody Is", was covered by Showaddywaddy on their 1991 album, "Jump, Boogie & Jive".
Ray stayed with the band for 10 years until the spring of 1995, when he left to be replaced by Danny Willson. After leaving SWW, Ray played with The Teddys alongside Malcolm Allured and Bill Gask in the late '90s until around the year 2000.
He now lives in Monmouth where he works as a guitar tutor.
